Dear BYC Maritime Science & Seamanship Foundation Committee,
This spring, I traveled to Fairhope, Alabama to take part in the USODA Team Trials regatta. To get to this event, I qualified at both USODA Nationals and Pacific Coast Champs. There were around 300 sailors at this event. Since I was the only person from my team, Balboa Yacht Club, I raced with the Cal Yacht Club racing team alongside coach Gabi.
On the first two days of racing, the conditions were consistently windy at around 10–15 knots. The tow out was about 30 minutes. My results on these days were around mid-fleet, with some top-third finishes, since these are my ideal conditions and suit my size well. On the next two days, it was storming in the mornings, so we were not allowed to go out right away. When we finally launched around 12 PM, there was very light wind (1–2 knots) and limited racing. I did not perform as well in these conditions, as they were more challenging for me. My goals for this regatta were to finish in the top third and qualify for the Opti Development Team.
This experience helped me learn a lot of important skills, especially adapting to different conditions. I worked on handling light air, adjusting to constant wind shifts, and managing changes in boat speed. I also learned the importance of focusing on the next race rather than the previous one, which helped me stay mentally prepared.
Because the regatta required me to miss a week of school, I also had to stay organized and keep up with my assignments while traveling and competing. Balancing schoolwork with racing was challenging, but it taught me time management and responsibility – skills that will be important as I continue sailing competitively in high school and college.
All in all, thank you so much for your support in helping me attend this event. I met many new friends, experienced a new venue, and learned a lot both on and off the water. I am very grateful for your assistance – without it, I would not have had this opportunity. I am looking forward to continuing sharpening my Opti skills ahead of next year’s Team Trials.
