Dear BYC Maritime Sciences and Seamanship Foundation,

Thank you so much for helping to fund our time on the C420 at the 2017 SCYYRA Advanced Winter Clinic at the US Sailing Center in Long Beach. It was the first time Alex or I attended, and we made the most of our weekend and hope to take what we learned to the Orange Bowl and other regattas we attend.

The first day, the wind speed was around 15 knots, with gusts up to 17. We had the opportunity to practice straight-line boost speed and get Alex out on the trapeze, as well as learning to surf the swells downwind. Once we were off the water, we listened to one of our coaches, Steve Hunt, discuss his experiences and tips for racing in a very enlightening presentation.

On our next and final day at the clinic, the wind had decreased slightly, but we still had the opportunity to speed-test and hone our spinnaker sets, jibes, and takedowns. Then, we were able to sail 3 practice races, and after a short debrief, put our boats on the trailer and head back home.

Overall, we gained many tips, ideas, and tricks that will benefit us as we progress in the sailing world, and cannot thank the MSSF enough for your generous support.

Sincerely,
Jean Wanlass
