This Ida Lewis Regatta started out on a great note. The clinic and the coaches were amazing and extremely helpful. The 76 sailors were broken up into groups of about 10 sailors, making the coaching much more personalized. These coaches were from high-quality sailing universities who provided insightful information and tips on sailing the 420s. They encouraged us to talk to them individually and to ask a lot of questions, which was especially beneficial in leading up to the competition.
The first day of racing went fairly well. The conditions were tricky because it was a small lake and the wind was very shifty, which greatly differed from the ocean sailing that we were used to. However, we were able to end the first day in ninth place. The second day was not as favorable and the wind conditions were very light and just as tricky, so we dropped a few places and ended the day in thirteenth place. Unfortunately, on the third day, there was absolutely no wind and we were not able to complete any races that day, marking the end to the regatta.
We were very pleased with our results and it was such a great learning experience. We were able to meet and become friends with so many different girls from all over the country, as well as to work with some amazing college sailing coaches. We are very grateful that we were able to travel outside of California and attend such a prestigious event such as this one.
