Dear BYC Maritime Sciences and Seamanship Foundation,
Thank you so much for supporting me in the CISA Clinic. CISA, California International Sailing Association, has always provided amazing coaches at their clinics and regattas. This clinic was no exception! For the first day, second day, and third day the breeze was way up! I was sailing in the C420 class as a crew with Christophe Killian, and we are still pretty new to the boat so we were learning a lot particularly in the heavy breeze.
The first day in wind was the boathandling day where we learned to maneuver the boat more with our weight not only by hiking but also by using the trap to get flat fast amog others. The second day was boatspeed. We had the opportunity to develop skills dealing with adjusting controls more frequently, and the importance of keeping the boat flat. The third day was tactics, which wouldn’t work without having boathandling and boatspeed skills. I learned that in the C420 we have to pick a side particularly because if your downspeed the C420 doesn’t accelerate as fast. The last day was race day! It wasn’t very windy so we worked hard to look upwind for shifts and play the course well.
We ended up in 8th of 11 so we were a bit bummed, but were excited that we beat some boats and learned a lot of new skills to work on and develop in the future.Once again thank you for supporting me in sailing and my efforts to better myself in our sport.
Sincerely,
Harrison Vandervort
